Radhika Loganathan, a postgraduate student at the International Medical University (IMU), was awarded the Young Scientist Award at the 10th International Conference on Free Radical Research (SFRR 2011) held in Chennai, India, from 9-11 January, 2011. She received the award at a Valedictory Function from Dr Young Jhoon Surh who delivered the keynote address at the conference and is from Seoul National University, Korea.
At the conference, Radhika also gave an oral presentation entitled "Tocotrienols induces apoptosis in human breast cancer cells by PARP cleavage and inhibition of NF-kB". This presentation is a result of Radhika"s research for her Masters degree on the antiproliferative and selective apoptotic effect of tocotrienols, engaging the novel discovery with the new string of study on PARP cleavage as apoptotic marker.
According to Radhika, palm oil exhibits strong anti-oxidant properties due to the presence of a high amount of vitamin E, which comprises a mixture of various isomers of tocopherols and tocotrienols. Tocotrienols are structurally similar to tocopherols, however only tocotrienols display potent anticancer activity. Tocotrienols have shown remarkable antiproliferative effects on the growth of both oestrogen independent (MDA-MB-231) and oestrogen dependent (MCF-7) human breast cancer cells. The research found that tocotrienols could significantly induce antiproliferative and apoptosis effects besides inhibiting the nuclear factor-КB (NFkB) pathway in human breast cancer cell lines.
"The conference has definitely provided me a good platform to interact with the other participants from all over the world. The informative sessions have also been fruitful in picking up nuggets of wisdom. In short, the conference was indeed splendid with great speakers and wise participants." said Radhika.
The "10th International Conference on Free Radical Research" (SFRR 2011) was well-attended by 40 world renowned scientists, 60 national scientists, 70 distinguished professors and about 140 research scholars and students from all over the world. The conference participants also had the opportunity to attend an Inauguration programme at Sagar Sangamam Auditorium of National Institute of Ocean Technology. At this event, there were interesting talks on antioxidants and the importance of scientist to mankind. Among the speakers were distinguished scientist Dr W Selvamurthy, former judge Honorable Dr Justice S Mohan, senior scientists Dr Ram Sharma and Dr Mukerjee. The event ended with Katakali cultural dance and banquet dinner.
The conference highlighted cutting-edge advances in all major disciplines of free radical research therapy. This three-day event featured recent findings from leading industrial, clinical and academic experts in the field, in the form of lectures and posters.
The SFRR 2011 provided a forum for in-depth assessment of the challenges involved in the dynamic and fast moving fields of free radical research, drug discovery and therapy. It brought together leading clinicians, medicinal chemists, pharmacologists, biotechnologists, and other allied professionals to discuss and present the latest important developments in free radical research.
